Protein supplements production, example plant overview – Pakistan industrial sector update part 5

For the first hour of the batch process the substrate flow is directed via the valve, FCV 14, to stream 45. This supplies it to the inoculant reactor, R001, at a rate off 0.73m3/hr for one hour.

The flow through stream 45 is then ceased after the first hour by closing FCV 14. After this inoculation period the substrate is then directed to the flows stream 46, stream 47 and stream 48 via FCV 15. The distribution of this flow is to
be totally symmetrical between the three flows.

The flows stream 46, stream 47 and stream 48 lead to the final fermentor bioreactors R002, R003 and R004 respectively which all have a volume of 30m3. Stream 46, stream 47 and stream 48 are designed to distribute the flow of the substrate to its
respective final fermentor in an even manner throughout the reactor.

This is to ensure that local high concentrations do not occur within the bioreactor. Such local high concentrations could lead to the undesired production of ethanol.

Stream 46, stream 47 and stream 48 are operational between hours 1 to 20 of the batch fermentation. The flow rates through these flows will increase exponentially throughout the time of the batch. Stream 11 will have a range of 0.17 to 10.44m3/hr.

As such each of the pipes, stream 46, stream 47 and stream 48 will have a range of 0.06 to 3.5m3/hr. As a result of the large range for these flows, two different pumps will have to be used for the operation.

This is to ensure that the pumps can be only operational between 5 and 95% of its respective range. This means that between the hours of 1 up to 14 of the batch the flow of F10 will be pumped by P111. Then for the remainder of the batch,
hours from 14 to 20, F10 will be pumped by P110.
