New Delhi: (Friday, February 10, 2012) Indian Minister for commerce, industry and textile, Anand Sharma, along with an 80-member large contingent of businessmen is expected to arrive Pakistan on a three-day visit on February 13.
This is for the first time in last three decades when an Indian commerce minister is visiting Pakistan and that too with a large delegation of businessmen with a view to strengthen business and economic ties between the two countries.
According to news reports, the Indian delegation will visit Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad during their three-day stay.
Talking about this visit, Ficci President RV Kanoria said, “Amount of interest for this historic visit is huge. Large SMEs are also accompanying. Both the countries are going to gain from this visit.” The main objective of the
Indian delegation to visit Pakistan is to help normalize the economic ties between the two neighbours.
Talking about the potential of trade volume, Kanoria said further, “I have no doubt in my mind that bilateral trade which currently stands at about USD 3 billion can be raised to USD 10 billion if trade through this countries (Dubai,
Singapore and Central Asian countries) is channelized into direct exchanges between the countries.”
The volume of third-country trade between Pakistan and India is a whooping USD 10 billion. Both Pakistan and India’s trade with each other amounts to less than one percent of their share of global trade.
