We are not allowed to work; says Zardari
Friday, February 10th, 2012 11:27:27 by Faisal FarooqAfter spending four years in power, President Asif Ali Zardari Thursday said that the incumbent could make Pakistan a developed country but it was not being permitted to work freely.
Speaking at a dinner for outgoing senators at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, the President said that they will be remembered in the Parliament’s history as proud parliamentarians who had unanimously removed the traces of dictatorships from the Constitution and making possible the realization of shared national ideal of restoring democracy by their wisdom and selflessness.
He asserted, “Nobody can deprive you [retiring Senators] of this great honour which will always remain the first line in your biography regardless of other achievements to your credit”.
In his view, the Upper House has been the headspring of political rapprochement in the country that was convincingly evidenced while making critical lawmaking.
Zardari continued that the work of the senators and parliamentarians have increased the trust of the people not only in politicians, but also in the democratic setup as a guardian of our national ambitions, which he said was no little accomplishment.
He opined that the incumbent was doing a lot on all fronts but much more needed to be done to face various challenges and put the economy on the fast track of growth and development.
The president was quoted as saying, “You have set high standards of excellence in Parliamentary practices and you have lit the path for the future generations to follow and that those coming after you will build on your legacy”.
About the war on terror, Asif Ali Zardari stated that defeat was not an option and they would have to eliminate this mindset. He further informed that he had raised the issue of drug trafficking with foreign delegations, saying it was the major missing element in the war against militancy and was a great source of funding for the terrorists.
He maintained that the country had abundant natural resources of all kinds and they would have to work together to strengthen their economy for the sake of development. The incumbent is taking all possible steps for the welfare of the masses and to boost the economy.
About Balochistan, the President recounted the accomplishments of the government, claiming peace and development of the province was a pillar of the present government’s policy.
He commented that development projects initiated by the present government would heal the wounds of Baloch people made during the previous regimes.
