Different e-book formats: blessing or a hassle – Part 2

Kobo, a Canadian bookstore which opened in 2009, has one of the largest libraries of digital reading material in the world with more than 2.5 million books, magazines and newspapers. They plan to open business in Europe this year.

“We realize that the clients want to be free to read books on any device of choice. For this reason we work with ePub, a format agreed and established as a standard by IDPF (International Digital Publishing Forum). The customer who buys a book should be able to read it on any device that he chooses. ePub will be the standards defined by digital publishers, “says Silvia Clemares, Kobo delegate in Spain.

DRM (Digital Rights Management) is the protection that adds to digital book to prevent it from being copied. Xavier said Solà uses DRM to respect the rights of the copyright and decides whether to encrypt the book or not.

“The main problem was that Adobe’s DRM (most used) that hinders the shopping experience because it is complex and cumbersome for the users. The problem is not with Adobe, but the procedure of downloading the file. On the other hand, a reader who downloads a file without paying for it has a better download experience and can share the file. A user who buys the same content is penalized by having to go through a lengthy procedure and limitation of its distribution to others,” said Alberto Vicente, who is the editor at Biografiasdeportivas.com, which sells DRM-free.
