According to sources in the United State of America (USA), a man from Uzbekistan living illegally in the US has pleaded guilty on Friday, February 10, 2012 to terrorism and weapons charges involving threats to kill President Barack Obama.
Defendant Ulugbek Kodirov, 22, pleaded guilty in US District Court in Birmingham, Alabama, to three charges as part of an agreement that spares him from a potential life sentence.
Kodirov is to be sentenced on May 17 and still faced up to 15 years in prison for providing material support for terrorist activity, up to 10 years for being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm and up to five years for threatening to assassinate
the president.
Four other charges against him were dropped, and mainly involved additional threats to kill Obama. Details of the threats have not been released.
Kodirov was arrested in July at an Alabama motel after buying an automatic weapon from an undercover agent. Prosecutors said he came to the United States in 2009, but his student visa was revoked in April 2010 after he failed to enrol in school.
Since the 911 attacks the US has been on high alert and potential of foreign terrorists attacking or killing key targets has increased to a great extent.
However, security officials in the US believe that they have the situation under control as there has not been a single incident of terrorism after September 11 attacks that were carried out by Al-Qaida operatives.
