MS Dhoni guided India to a superb four-wicket victory against Australia in the fourth match of the Commonwealth Bank Series at Adelaide Oval in Australia on Sunday, February 12, 2012.
Batting first, the home team scored 269 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 50 overs. David Hussey was the top scorer of the innings with 72 runs from 76 deliveries.
The Aussies looked well set to go past 300 at one stage, but a few quick wickets towards the end of the innings restricted them below 270.
India’s Umesh Yadav was the pick of the bowlers, scalping a couple of wickets for 49 runs.
In reply, the Men in Blue were given a decent start by opener Gautam Gambhir, who contributed 92 runs to the total. He got good support from middle-order batsmen Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina, who scored 33 and 38 respectively.
However, the hosts bounced back with a few quick strikes towards the end of the innings. Dhoni did not panic though and batted until the end. He banged a crucial six in the last over, when India needed 13 runs to win. This guided the tourists to a four-wicket
win with a couple of balls to spare.
The Indian skipper was deligghted after winning and said, "This six was very special. The World Cup six was too but we could have done that with singles. You have to analyse whether you should be playing that shot. There were a few shots we shouldn’t
have played in this game so we need to work on that. We need to now concentrate one game at a time. Yuvraj will get well soon and I believe he will come out strong."
The man of the match award went to Gautam Gambhir, who was pleased to score some improtant runs today. He stated, "Any runs in Australia is special. Dhoni is a good finisher and he stays calm and that’s important. I want Yuvraj to get well soon
and we hope he comes back soon."
