The Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani has been charged with contempt of court today by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. In the event that the Prime Minister of Pakistan of convicted of the crime, he will face dire consequences that include being
imprisoned as well as losing office.
On his part, Yousuf Raza Gilani has pleaded not guilty. The stance taken by the Prime Minister of Pakistan shows that he is willing to make extreme sacrifices for the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari and the government of the country which is ruled
by the Pakistan People’s Party.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan had been asking the Prime Minister to write to the Swiss probe in order to re start an investigation in which Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari have been named for money laundering. The investigation against the President of Pakistan
was made to come to an end after the National reconciliation Ordinance was signed by Bhutto during the time that the President of the country was Gen. (retd) Pervez Musharraf.
However, the apex court of the country had deemed the NRO as illegal that in effect called for the re starting of the investigation against the President of Pakistan. The government had resisted by putting up the stance that the President had legal immunity
both outside and inside the country as well. As a result, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had ordered the Prime Minister of the country to appear before the court.
The charge against the Prime Minister of Pakistan was made in the following manner by a judge of the Supreme Court: “You have committed contempt of court … and you are to be tried.”
On the other hand, the following statements were made by an opposite member of the parliament, Ayaz Amir: “This democratic dispensation — regardless of its own faults, regardless of its own omissions — it has had to face a lot of pressure, from Rawalpindi,
from Apbarra. It will be some time before we can say that look here, the tree of democracy has struck deep and strong roots, and it is there to stand.”
