Protein supplements production, example plant overview – Pakistan industrial sector update part 8

After the first hour of the batch the product of R001 is pumped equally in to the three final reactors, R002, R003 and R004 through P114 and flows through stream 46, stream 47 and stream 48. The total final volume of R001 is 24.6m3 and has a cell
concentration of 6.19kg/m3. It also has a substrate concentration of 0.2519kg/m3 and is at 30°C.

The production is the carried out in the final reactors for the remainder of the 20 hour batch time. The 20 hour batch time has been designated due to process and operational considerations. A batch time of this magnitude allows for stereotypical use of
staff as well as ensuring that operational management of the reactors is possible. This is that not so much biomass is produced in a reactor as to create problems with aeration of the reactor i.e. the air can still be successfully supplied to the reactor and
not hindered by a dense concentration of cells.

After the completion of the batch the contents of all three final reactors are emptied in to the production storage tank, T009. This is done through pipe lines stream 25, 27 and 28 and by pumps, P118, P116 and P120. The volume of each final reactor at 20
hours is 26m3 and the concentration of cells is 113.1kg/m3. Due to the batch time of 20 hours and with 1 of them within R001 it allows 5 hours for emptying and sterilising the final reactors ready for the next batch. This means that R002,
R003 and R004 will be emptied during a period of 3 hours at a rate of 9.4m3/hr. The temperature of these flows will be 30°C.

Cooling water is supplied to the jackets of the reactors throughout the batch. This is done to ensure a constant temperature for the process and as such provide the cells with optimum growing conditions. The optimum thermal growing conditions for
S. Cerevisiae are between 30 and 35°C. The cooling water to achieve this comes from the storage tank, T007, and is provided through the centrifugal pump.
