Islamabad: (Tuesday, February 14, 2012) The Supreme Court of Pakistan today rejected the National Accountability of Bureau’s (NAB) report on corruption in Pakistan Railways.
Expressing its dissatisfaction with the facts presented in the report, the apex court summoned the secretaries of defence, railways and interior to submit explanation on encroachment of the department’s land.
Hearing the case, the bench headed by Chief justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry observed that the authorities concerned had failed to reclaim the department’s property encroached by the army, FC, rangers and
other influential people.
Condemning the rampant corruption in Pakistan railways, the chief justice remarked that nabbing the poor and letting the big fish go had become a culture in the country.
Responding to the court’s notice, Nawaz Kharal, the counsel for the Pakistan railways claimed that 87 acres of land in 14 districts had been reclaimed from the encroachment mafia.
During today’s proceedings, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the Chairman of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Rehabilitation of the Railways told the bench that 80 percent of the employees of the department are corrupt.
After issuing notices to the concerned authorities, the court adjourned the haring until February 27.
