National Assembly passes resolution to condemn US hearing on Baluchistan

After the US Congressional hearing on Baluchistan, the province is taking centre stage on the political landscape, but more because of what is happening in America than in the region itself.

On one side, Pakistan accused Washington of meddling in the Balochistan while on the other hand the National Assembly unanimously passed an opposition-moved resolution to condemn the Congress committee’s hearing on the human violation in the province.

Pakistan observed that the initiative would jeopardize the healing process of already strained Pak-US relations.

Leader of the Opposition Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan of the PML-N took the treasury benches to task for what he stated was its discount of the issue. He moved the resolution to condemn US interference in Pakistan’s internal affairs saying, “It seems we are ignorant of our sovereignty”.

Ch. Nisar also raised a question about the validation provided by the US administration that the Congress committee holds hearings of issues related to human rights violations across the globe.

He questioned, “Why did the committee not take any action during the regime of former dictator Pervez Musharraf when Akbar Bugti was killed, (Jamia Hafsa) students were killed and when drones kill innocent people?”

At the same time, the opposition leader appeared to give the military margin as far as Balochistan is concerned. He hailed clarifications provided by the army chief saying, “We always blame the armed forces but we should praise their response as well”.

The PPP, the leading party of the coalition government welcomed the resolution. Mir Humayun Aziz Kurd, however, stated that a mere resolution could not resolve the dilemma of Balochistan.

Commenting about role of security forces, he observed, “I reject the statement that there is no operation going on in Balochistan”.

Upon which Ch. Nisar said that the resolution was only relevant to what was taking place in the US and is against the violation of our sovereignty. Apparently, he was more interested in country’s sovereignty rather than the province’s grievances.

In quite an unexpected move, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani chose to remain mum on his indictment, and instead chose to respond to a question on the government’s initiatives for flood relief.
