The National Assembly of Pakistan has agreed upon a decision unanimously and passed the 20th Constitutional Amendment Bill. The passing of the Bill took place on the Tuesday night.
The passing of the 20th amendment is aimed at empowering the Election Commission of Pakistan. The Bill will work towards making the Election Commission an independent body and will enable formulation of institutions that would act as neutral caretaker
set ups. The Bill will be giving the power to the Election Commission of Pakistan to set up independent as well as unbiased structures that would be established at the centre as well as the provinces so that the carrying out of fair as well as transparent
elections would be done.
The number of parliament members that asserted their approval of the passing of the 20th amendment totaled to be 247. On the other hand, no member of the parliament voted against the passing of the bill. As a result, the 20th amendment
was passed with a majority of two thirds of the House.
The passing of the 20th amendment will be making changed to the constitution of Pakistan with regards to six of its articles as well as the second and third schedules. Not only that, the passing of the 20th amendment is also going to
add an article to the document of the constitution of Pakistan.
Previously, some members of the parliament had their licenses suspended by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The suspension was supposed to be in effect till the time the 20th amendment was passed by the parliament.
The 20th amendment touches upon what steps to be taken in case the National Assembly of the country is made to dissolve and how the care taker Prime Minister of the government should be appointed. It also talks about the steps to be taken in case
the appointment of the care taker Prime Minister of the country is not done within three days of the dissolution of the National Assembly of Pakistan.
In the turmoil that is currently engulfing the political scenario of the country, the passing of the 20th amendment comes as a welcome endeavor.
