Saving Democracy

Looking for quick fix solutions for the economy is never a good way to go as it inflicts disaster in the long term, something the nation witnessed after nearly 10 years of military rule during the Pervez Musharraf regime, but many people have seemed to be
demanding that once again.

Instead of learning from the past, we are focused on living in the present and not planning for the future.

What Pakistan needs at the moment is a strong basis for future governments to work on and that could mean that the people will need to eat grass for some years because there no all of a sudden solutions like some politicians claim there to be just to get
into power.

Looking at the power crisis, long term projects have been inaugurated and even the smallest of dams require nearly 10 years of consistent construction and a smooth supply of funds, which has not properly been done in the past but as projects now have been
finally started like the 201MW Reshma power plant, Punjab’s first wind energy project in Kalar Khar, which are just a few of many.

The Thar coal project, which is one of the biggest in the world along with providing the people with some sort of income support are the base which will eventually help develop this nation.

The biggest one is without a doubt the Diamer-Bhasha Dam which will produce up to 4,500MW of electricity and store an extra 8,500,000 acre feet of water for irrigation and drinking purposes, but will take more than seven years to complete.

As Pakistan has faced nearly 40 years of martial law dictatorship, we have come to realise one thing, which is the khaki’s are certainly incapable of ruling any government institution and throughout the world, there is not a single example today in which
a successful country is being run by the military.

Like the United States of America, a country which is now what it is after more than 200 years of evolution, should be a prime example for us. Even a country like India, which is considered to be one of the up and coming super powers of the world has had
a smooth process of democracy despite their being political turmoil as well, but never has the military dared to interfere in their affairs.

We must realise that this government is not one and all, there have been many mistakes and many things have gone wrong due to haste decision making and the lack of proper guidance along with internal pressure from all ends including state institutions, but
there is hope and that is the process of continuing democracy through the vote and not the bullet.

It is the first time we have witnessed an elected prime minister with a majority in the parliament has shown up in court when called by the judges instead of declaring war against the judiciary.

When you realise that slowly but gradually, the rule of law is being implemented some way or another, than there can be nothing but progress and prosperity in a nation that works its own way up.
