President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai has arrived in Pakistan to take part in the trilateral summit on the future of Afghanistan, which includes Pakistan and Iran. Mahmud Ahmadinejad, the President of Iran is also expected to land in Pakistan anytime today.
The summit is going to be held on Friday and the major topic under discussion will be the post-US scenario in Afghanistan and South Asia.
The US has announced to evacuate Afghanistan by 2014 and it will be very interesting to see that which force is able to form the government after the US exit. Afghanistan is a heterogeneous country with a number of ethnic groups living there and a number
of people fear a civil war in Afghanistan to gain power after the US forces leave the region.
Taliban’s government was overthrown by the US back in 2001 and the Northern Alliance leader, Hamid Karzai was made the President of the country. However, apart from Kabul, most of the country is still controlled by the Taliban, who remain the most popular
political force in Afghanistan, even after a decade of warfare.
Recently, the US has shown inclination to hold talks with Taliban and they have been allowed to open an office in Qatar.
Upon reaching Islamabad, Karzai revealed that even his government is in negotiations with the Taliban as everyone wants a peaceful Afghanistan.
Karazi expressed, "There have been contacts between the U.S. government and the Taliban, there have been contacts between the Afghan government and the Taliban, and there have been some contacts that we have made, all of us together, including the Taliban."
Pakistan and Iran are major regional players in South Asia and most of the political analysts believe that these two countries will have to play a major role in order to make sure that there is a stable and peaceful transfer of power in Afghanistan. A peaceful
Afghanistan is a prerequisite for the prosperity of these two neighbouring Muslim countries.
Iran has been under immense international pressure since last year because of its nuclear program but Pakistan has made it clear that it will not abandon its economic ties with Tehran. If Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan are able to develop a unity bloc in
the region, it is more than likely that peace will prevail and there will be prosperity in these three countries.
