Australia thumped India by 110 runs in the seventh One Day International (ODI) of the Commonwealth Bank Series at the Brisbane Cricket Ground (BCG) on Sunday, February 19, 2012.
The hosts piled 288 runs for the loss of five wickets, after electing to bat first today. They were given a solid start by openers David Warner and Matthew Wade, as the pair put on 70 runs for the first wicket.
However, the momentum shifted towards India in the middle overs, as three quick wickets fell with a score of 117 on board. Veteran Michael Hussey and youngster Peter Forrest fought back for their side, contributing 100 runs for the fourth wicket partnership.
Both scored half-centuries with the former top scoring with 59 runs.
David Hussey and Daniel Christian stormed their way to 288 with a flurry of boundaries towards the end of the innings. They scored unbeaten cameos of 26 and 30 respectively.
Irfan Pathan was the best bowler for India, picking up three wickets for 61 runs in his 10 overs.
However, the tourists were unable to make an impression with the bat and were all out for 178 in 43.3 overs. Skipper MS Dhoni was the only batsman to make an impression, as he scored 56 runs, but there was no support for him from the other end.
Australia’s Ben Hilfenhaus picked up a five-for and was declared man-of-the-match for his superb spell. He got excellent support from veteran pacer Brett Lee, who scalped three wickets in the match.
Commenting on his side’s overall show today, Dhoni stated, “The breakthroughs put pressure on us. People often think about the asking rate. The two new balls make it a bit difficult so you have to respect that early on. It gets a bit easier to hit in the
middle overs. Our bowlers were affected by the heat, they were cramping so it affected their execution.”
On the other hand, stand in Australian captain Ricky Ponting said, “I thought out score was just above par. The Indians didn’t hit that many boundaries so we were fantastic. We’ve turned the momentum back our way. We knew the pitch would offer a bit more
at night.”
