Islamabad: (Monday, February 20, 2012) During its session today, the upper house here in Islamabad approved the 20th constitutional amendment. The amendment will become a part of Pakistan’s constitution after it is signed
by President Asif Ali Zardari.
Enjoying rather a huge support, the said amendment had 74 votes in favour, while only two of the voters decided to oppose it. The bill seeking the amendment had already been unanimously passed by the National Assembly.
Earlier, after getting engaged in thorough discussions, the government and the opposition reached on a consensus on the amendment just before the bill presented before the upper house.
Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, on approval of the bill, congratulated the parliamentarians and said that names of those who approved it would be written in the history.
Noting that the country’s constitution (1973) guaranteed security of the country, PM Gilani said that the general elections will be transparent.
