Australia crush India, seals bonus point
Monday, February 20th, 2012 2:45:37 by Taha HabibThe Australians brushed aside India by a massive margin of 110 runs in the seventh ODI of the on-going Commonwealth Bank Series in Australia. This win has allowed Srilanka to comeback in the series who find themselves third in the table of the three sides
and will face India in their next game on Tuesday, February 21, at the Gabba, Brisbane.
Australia were once again led by Ricky Ponting in the absence of regular skipper, Michael Clarke. The home side also included Ben Hilfenhaus in place of Ryan Harris. India left out Ravichandran Ashwin and included Umesh Yadav into the line-up. Virendar Sehwag
was once again opted out of the starting XI. Matthew Wade and David Warner provided with a brisk start and made 45 and 43 respectively before Ponting once again failed to deliver and lost his wicket for 7. Mike Hussey and Peter Forrest added 100 runs for the
fourth wicket before Hussey looped a catch to Suresh Raina for 59. Forrest made 52 and was the last wicket to fall in the Aussie innings. Daniel Christian and David Hussey added 65 unbeaten runs for the sixth wicket and finished Australian innings at 288/5.
Irfan Pathan picked up three wickets while Zaheer Khan and Rohit Sharma picked up a wicket each.
India made a terrible start with their chase and lost their first four wickets for 36 runs before Mahinder Singh Dhoni stabilized the innings to some extent with a patient 56 of 84 balls. No other individual was able to stand in front of the Aussie pace
attack and Pathan was the second highest scorer after Dhoni with 19 runs. The world champions were all out for 178 to go second in the points table. Hilfenhaus picked up five wickets while Brett Lee picked three scalps. Mitchell Starc and Xavier Doherty picked
up a wicket each.
