It has recently been revealed that the lawyer of Hussain Haqqani, Zahid Bukhari has been denied a visa to go to the United Kingdom. The counsel of Hussain Haqqani was interested in making the visit for the purpose of taking part in the memo gate proceedings
taking place in England.
Bukhari expressed his disappointment at not having the chance to attend the memo gate proceedings in London in the following manner, “Now I will be unable to attend the recording of Mansoor Ijaz’s testimony at the London High Commission on February 22.”
Hussain Haqqani had been allegedly involved in the memo gate scandal that took the country by storm in the later part of the previous year. The scandal came to light when an America based Pakistani business man named Manzoor Ijaz claimed that he had been
asked by Hussain Haqqani to forward an unsigned memo to the United States that asked for the support of the super power to reign in the military of the country. According to the indications, the memo came from an individual in the high ranking offices of the
government of Pakistan ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party. Such a suggestion raised rumours that the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari may be involved in the transmitting of the memo to the United States.
The memo asked the United States to control the military of Pakistan in return for some compensation. The request to control the military of the country was made on the basis that the government of Pakistan feared that a coup might take place in the country
after the death of the leader of Al Qaida, Osama bin Laden.
Hussain Haqqani subsequently resigned from office after which the Supreme Court of Pakistan started its investigations in order to determine the true nature of the note and the individuals involved in the sending of the memo to the super power.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan asked for Mazoor Ijaz to be available in the country for the proceedings to take place but the business man declined to come to the country on the basis of security reasons.
