Apple released the beta version of its new desktop operating system Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion – Part 6
Monday, February 20th, 2012 6:20:49 by Usman KhalidNow that the new version has emerged on the horizon and Apple claiming that Mountain Lion will be rolled out in the latter half of 2012, it can be expected that Mac OS X is back on yearly updates schedule, just like the early 2000s.
However, that might prove to be a positive and a negative sign simultaneously or alternatively. Every other Apple device including mobile operating system, iOS works on the yearly update schedule, the OS X had been left out of the group. This can be a good sign for users who want a newer version every year.
However, Apple’s statistics show that more than half of Apple’s users are still on Snow Leopard, the 2009 release of Mac OS X. This means that the switch to new version is slow; only 19 million copies to 10.7 Lion have been shipped to date. Those users now account for 30 percent of those on the Mac platform, the company said.
Furthermore, app developers will have short span of time to develop applications on a single platform if Apple moves forward with annual update scheme. The shift to a new platform is difficult as it is less marketable.
The two big questions that remain are whether the two operating systems will converge, and when such a thing will happen. Mountain Lion is certainly another not-so-subtle step in that direction with a handful of iOS apps making their way over to the desktop. But we’re not there quite yet. More than anything this release is another move by Apple to make iPhone and iPad users feel at home on a Mac, something that’s become increasingly important with those devices now able to exist on their own, without the help of iTunes.
