Only lucky people embrace martyrdoms; says Prime Minister Gilani
Monday, February 20th, 2012 9:59:19 by Faisal FarooqEmbattled Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has said that martyrdom was achieved by only a fortunate few, “I do not know whether we will embrace martyrdom or emerge as a ghazi (victor)”.
While speaking to the media in Pir Jo Goth, the premier refused to give any statement regarding the contempt charges framed against him. He observed, “Those who embrace martyrdom are lucky, and as for now, I don’t know what will happen. Only my lawyer can answer this”.
In his view, the completion of five-year term by parliament and the government would bring political stability to the country. He commented, “Conspiracies were hatched against every democratic government in the past. If governments in the past were allowed to complete their terms, the situation would have been far better now”.
The PM also did not rule out the possibility of early elections, saying the issue could be discussed after the Senate polls and the presentation of the budget. Applauding the PPP-led government, he stated that 80 percent implementation of the Charter of Democracy had been achieved.
Gilani was of the view that the people misunderstand the abbreviation of Most Favoured Nation (MFN) as ‘most friendly nation’. The status of MFN to India was granted by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah at the time of participation.
The premier asserted, “Granting a country MFN status does not mean that that country becomes the most favourite country. National interest should be supreme. Look at China, despite its disputes with India, the current trade between the two countries stand at Rs100 billion”.
He further informed that the incumbent was conducted trade with India worth Rs15 billion. “By MFN we mean that the cabinet gives permission to the ministry of commerce to hold talks with its Indian counterpart in order to strike a trade balance,” he added.
In order to discuss the law and order situation and US Congressional hearing on Balochistan, he called an All Parties Conference (APC). He commented that negotiations with the leadership should be done and then they will devise a solution based on collective wisdom.

Since when is losing a PM office worthy of ‘martyrdom’? Only in Pakistan I suppose where every second death is regarded by one party or another ‘a shaheed’.
I think Gillani is taking himself far, far too seriously.
