The government of Pakistan ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party recently called in the US Charge d’ Affaires, Ambassador Richard Hoagland in order to transmit the Pakistani sentiment of the public as well as that of the government to the United States of
America upon the submission of a resolution to the U.S. House of Representatives concerning the southwestern Balochsitan province of Pakistan.
In effect, the resolution that was submitted to the US House of representatives called for an independent Baluchistan as a country apart from Pakistan. The resolution submitted clearly stated that the Baluchi people are entitled to the right of self determination.
The reason cited for the measure of independence from Pakistan to be taken was that the Baluchi were being oppressed and denied their rights. Not only that, the resolution also said that the human rights violation has been carried out by Pakistan against the
Baluchi people despite the fact that they inhabit the largest province in the country.
The statement released by the Foreign Ministry of Pakistan commented on the summoning of Hoagland in the following manner: “Ambassador Hoagland was told in clear terms that the move in the US Congress was contrary to the spirit of friendly relations and
violative of the principles of the United Nations Charter, international law and recognized norms of inter-state conduct.”
The US Ambassador was called in and clearly told to convey the concern the submission of the resolution has caused in the Pakistani quarters. In response to the strong concern that was displayed by the people of Pakistan as well as the government, the American
embassy issued a statement saying that the United States “respects the territorial integrity of Pakistan and members of Congress introduce legislation on numerous foreign affairs topics and these bills do not in any way imply U.S. government endorsement of
any particular policy”.
The submission of the resolution in the US House of Representatives has been strongly condemned by both the Pakistani Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani as well as the Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar. A similar reaction was also shown by the Pakistani
Ambassador in US, Sherry Rehman.
