The Boom-Boom might lead the Green Team towards victory at the event

The Asia cup is absolutely one of the most awaited cricketing events of the 2012 season. The top Asian teams will have a chance to prove their brilliance in Bangladesh next month.

The 11th edition of the Asia Cup is scheduled from March 12- 22, 2012 as confirmed by the Asian Cricket Council on December 15th, 2011.

A total number of four teams qualified for the event this year are, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Hong Kong and United Arab Emirates are the two sides that have not qualified for the tournament this year since their last appearance in 2008.

Team India is clearly the favourites, considering the current strength of their team. They have won the Asia Cup on six different occasions in 1984, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1995 and 2010. The Indian side won 22 matches out of their total 36 appearances at the event.

The second most victories are by the Sri Lankan side, they have succeeded at the event on four different occasions.

The Sri Lankan team won the contest back in 1986, 1997, 2004 and 2008. They have won 29 matches out of the total 40 played during their ten appearances at the Asia Cup.

Bangladesh has never succeeded at the contest despite their nine appearances. Their best achievement was the third place finish during the Asia Cup in 1986. The Bengali side have played as many as 29 matches but only succeeded on two occasions.

On the other hand, Pakistani side has lost 12 out of their 31 matches played during the nine appearances at the competition.

The team has succeeded during the 2000 edition of the event and that is the only overall victory claimed by the side.

The final was played between Pakistan and Sri Lanka and Team Pakistan set a total of 277 runs with a useful contribution of 82 by Saeed Anwar.

Sri Lankan team could not achieve the set target and was all out on 238 in 45.2 overs and even Marvan Atapattu’s century could not change the fate of his side.

Team Pakistan is hopeful to repeat the same performance in the coming edition of the race. Good news for the team is that, PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf has approved Shahid Afridi’s name to lead the team in Asia Cup 2012.

Pakistani fans are still seeking revenge from the Indian squad since the World Cup 2011 semi final defeat. The March event is a perfect stage for the Green team to prove its strengths at the 50-over format of the game.

The planned schedule for the 11th edition of the Asia Cup is as under.
