Hizbut Tahrir slams military for court martial of Brigadier Ali Khan
Tuesday, February 21st, 2012 3:21:41 by Faisal FarooqIn what appeared to be a quite odd step, the Hizbut Tahrir (HuT), the banned outfit, has started openly defending Brigadier Ali Khan and four other military officers who are currently being court-martialled due to their alleged relationships with the banned militant organizations.
The banned outfit through a media statement resentfully flayed criticism on the establishment over its decision to try Brigadier Ali Khan in a military court, terming hi, as one of the most capable officers in the military.
Brig Ali was apprehended in May last year for alleged links with HuT while a day later four army majors were also held with similar charges.
Some media reports say that the army trial is currently in process. He also accused of attempted mutiny among the lower ranks of the army.
The banned outfit in its statement expressed its disappointment over the trial decision, explaining the intelligent personality of arrested officer.
The press note, which has been published on website of the banned outfit, highlighted illustrious military career of Brigadier Ali Khan, saying that he was a brilliant officer.
It observed, “He was an officer of humble origins from Punjab province who had a distinguished thirty-two year military career and was a gold medalist”.
The statement further commented, “Army officers who had served with Brigadier Ali Khan stated that he had been exerting influence on the military leadership to stop the alliance with America in its crusade against the Muslims of the tribal areas and Afghanistan”.
The matter came to the day light when Brig Khan openly challenged the then Chief of Army Staff, General Pervez Musharraf, in the military’s prestigious Quetta Staff College as to why he (Musharraf) did not make public the details of the alliance agreement with the United States (US).
In the same meeting, he further demanded a clear definition of the limits of the alliance with the US. In the very next move, General Musharraf while presiding over the promotion board refused Brig Khan’s expected promotion to the position of Major General.
Brig Khan, who has been in custody for almost 10 months, was working at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi at the time of his arrest. He has denied the allegations against him.
His lawyer, retired Col Inam Rahim, said his client was detained for demanding that someone within the military be held accountable for the covert US raid in Abbottabad.
