Sony has it all to lose as the PlayStation Vita hits Europe

The second generation portable gaming console has finally hit shelves in Europe and the consumer electronics giant will hoping for a better start than the one in Japan.

Nintendo currently dominate the handheld portable gaming market with the 3DS selling like hot cakes in Japan, where it has topped the hardware sales charts for as long as one can remember, and Sony are hoping to change that on their second attempt.

Having release the Vita in Japan just before Christmas, Sony were hoping to get a decent amount of sales, however, after a solid opening week, the sales figures took a nosedive and did not recover.

The Vita currently sits below both the PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii in the charts and the current market trend does not suggest any improvement.

However, the console hit stores in Europe and the United Kingdom last night and the turnout was just as good as when the 3DS was released in the same region.

Zohaib Ali, a resident of the UK, was the first person to get his hands on the Vita in the country and claimed that the reason behind the purchase was the fact that there was nothing else like it on the market.

The notion was repeated by almost every Sony executive each of whom commented on how the Vita had no competitors, in terms hardware capabilities, in the market. An obvious slate of the 3DS, which had a rough start as well, but managed to recover from it
with some style.

Sony has had a tough financial year, with the PlayStation Network being hacked and taken offline costing the company millions of dollars. The consumer electronics giant has changed its top most management in the hopes that their digital portfolio can be
expanded and their market share increased.

At the same time speculation is rife that the PlayStation 4 will be revealed at this year’s E3, however, Sony have strongly denied such reports claiming that the PS4 would be a distraction with the Vita just hitting shelves.
