AOC allows Nick D’Arcy to make his qualification attempt for the 2012 London Olympic Games

Following the decision of Swimming Australia, the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has allowed the notorious swimmer, Nick D’Arcy to compete at the Australia Selection Trials for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

The 24-year-old D’Arcy, who was impatiently waiting for the Swimming Australia’s suggestion to keep him in the shadow squad for the 2012 London Games, has finally earned the opportunity to represent Australia at the Olympic Games, if qualified.

The biggest setback in D’Arcy’s career was seen in 2008, when he attacked the former swimmer, Simon Cowley and as a result, he was expelled from the Australian squad to London.

Later, Cowley prosecuted him to pay the damages and the court directed D’Arcy to disburse $180,000 as compensation, but the controversial swimmer filed for bankruptcy, declaring that he would not be able to pay these damages.

It was believed that D’Arcy’s bankruptcy will impede his way to qualify for the London Games, but the butterfly specialist was optimistic that he would be taken to London, if proved his eligibility in the team.

In addition, the Australian experienced back and hip injury that halted his training program and he stayed out of pool for almost six months, but he had no intention to back down and just after his recovery, he smothered his opponents at the NSW State Open
Championships, earlier this February.

D’Arcy obtained a gold medal in the 200m butterfly and a bronze medal in the 100m discipline at the NSW meet. While talking to the media after his scintillating performance, D’Arcy unveiled that his talks with SA were positive and there will be no hindrance
in his qualification, if he performs.

After a few days, the AOC officials asked SA for their verdict whether they want to include D’Arcy in the shadow squad, which they confirmed after having a board meeting. Subsequently, the Australian Olympic team Chef de Mission, Nick Green revealed that
AOC has followed SA’s decision and D’Arcy is allowed to compete at the next month’s Olympic trials in Adelaide, which are starting from March 15.

He also said that, if D’Arcy meets the FINA time qualification standard, he would be taken to London,
