Se7en (1995) – Blast from a past!

If, for some reason, you need your films more intense and scarier than Se7en, then seek help immediately. Se7en instantly turned me into a fan of David Fincher. Few films leave one thinking about them and their images days, weeks and even years later as
does Fincher’s 1995 classic. Much like The Silence of the Lambs, Se7en takes the psychological thriller/horror genre and revitalizes it by taking the genre in new and intense direction.

The script, acting, casting, cinematography, special effects and directing are all exceptionally well executed and blend together via polished editing, sound design and score to yield a final product that is high-octane and high-impact. Few people will honestly
say they were not “creped out” or “freaked out” by Se7en, for it is one of those rare, rare films that seem to have penetrated underneath nearly every audience member’s skin.

The brilliant script by Andrew Kevin Walker centres on a two detectives (Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman) as they pursue a deadly serial killer whose killings in some fashion or another revolve around the Seven Deadly Sins. One by one these creative and gruesome
killings that revolve around the Seven Deadly Sins are unveiled in chilling (not overused here) fashion. Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey add excellent performances, with Spacey in particular burning himself into everyone’s memory.

At times visually striking, Se7en, DOP Darius Khondji deserves a great deal of credit for assisting Fincher and Walker in bringing this highly unsettling vision to life. A truly talented director of photography Khondji also worked on The City of Lost Children,
Alien: Resurrection and Panic Room, where he each time he brought a unique look to the final project.

Se7en is undoubtedly a modern classic and a absolute must see. Few endings are on par with the simply horrifying Se7en and will linger with most audience members for quite some time to come. Se7en is not only unforgettable but unusual in that it has taken
its place among a select group of films that have made their way into our modern collective lexicon. I could say more about Se7en but I don’t want to risk ruining such an intense ride.
