Supreme Court of Pakistan adjourns hearing against Gilani

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has recently given a statement in which it has said that the contempt hearing against the Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani will be adjourned till the February 28.

In this regard, the Supreme Court of the country also demanded from the counsel of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, that complete evidence regarding the case be provided to the Supreme Court by the February 27
at the latest. Having said that, the Supreme Court of the country also asked the counsel of the Prime Minister of Pakistan that it needs to be decided which of the two ways of prosecution should be taken. The two alternatives of prosecution that
are at hand are civil or criminal.

The Prime Minister of Pakistan is being charged with the contempt of court on the basis of the fact that Yousuf Raza Gilani failed to comply with the orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The Supreme Court of Pakistan had been repeatedly asking the Prime
Minister of the country to write to the Swiss government in order to ask it re start an investigation against the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari.

Asif Ali Zardari was charged with being involved in money laundering along with his wife, Bhutto. The investigation was going on regarding the allegations by the Swiss probe but they had been made to come to a halt by the National Reconciliation Ordinance
which was signed by Bhutto during the time the President of the country was Gen. (retd) Pervez Musharraf.

However, the apex court of Pakistan had deemed the NRP as illegal which in effect called for the re starting of the investigation against Asif Ali Zardari. However, the government of Pakistan ruled by the Pakistan People’s Party had not taken any step in
this regard due to which the Supreme Court of Pakistan had ordered the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to write to the Swiss.

However, Yousuf Raza Gilani had failed to do so arguing that the President of Pakistan enjoyed complete legal immunity both inside and outside the country.
