US businessman Mansoor Ijaz to continue his testimony in Pakistan High Commission

US business tycoon, Mansoor Ijaz, the man who architected the memogate controversy, made a much-awaited testimony before the judicial commission constituted by the Supreme Court to probe the matter.

His testimony will continue on Thursday at Pakistan’s High Commission in London. On the other, the Memo Commission is reviewing the applications filed by Husain Haqqani’s counsel Zahid Bukhari to cross-examine Manssor Ijaz and forensic examination of evidences.

Bukhari applied on Wednesday for forensic examination of the evidence provided by Mansoor Ijaz to the commission and his cross-examination.

Mansoor Ijaz while testifying through video link from London claimed he had delivered a secret memogate to then US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen enlisting their help to pre-empt a feared coup against the government in Pakistanon the request of former ambassador to US Husain Haqqani. He confirmed that Haqqani told him it was from the President Asif Zardari.

The Judicial Commission comprising Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Qazi Faez Esa, Sindh High Court Chief Justice Musheer Alam and Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman is investigating the controversial memogate drama.

The US businessman observed, “I asked (Haqqani) on whose authority he is doing this? He (Haqqani) said this is from the president of Pakistan who wants to form a national security team similar to the one in USA”.

He told the commission that he drafted the memo after Haqqani gave him notes, requesting that it should be delivered to Admiral Mike Mullen. Quoting Haqqani, he remarked. “The army wants to topple our government”.

In a new development, the US citizen informed the commission that the BlackBerry messages (BBM) record may not be retrievable even after waiving privacy rights of as he has been told by the Research in Motion (RIM) Company that they do not store BBMs for more than three months.

However, he stated that the only option left with the commission was to examine the BlackBerry sets of both Hussain and Ijaz.

Mansoor Ijaz offered to the commission the details of his telephone bill, three pages of which contain the record of the call logs that were exchanged between him and the Haqqani from May 9 to May 12.  Shortly, he did not add anything new to his statements he had filed in the Supreme Court.
