Manny Pacquiao: I’m willing to fight Floyd Mayweather
Thursday, February 23rd, 2012 1:01:11 by Imran Shaukat KhanThe eight-division world champion and the current WBO welterweight champion, Manny Pacquiao, has insisted that despite of the most recent set back in the negotiations, he is still willing to take on the undefeated American legend Floyd Mayweather junior because his son also wants him to beat Mayweather before leaving the sport.
“My son said, ‘Dad, I want you to retire, but before, you have to fight Mayweather and beat him,'” Pacquiao said. “I’m willing to fight Mayweather.”
Mayweather Junior, a five-division world champion and the current WBC welterweight champion, challenged Pacquiao for a May 5 fight but his offer was turned down by the Filipino boxing icon.
Mayweather is now fighting Miguel Cotto on May 5 and he blames Pacquiao turned him down because he is afraid to take him on. Therefore, Pacquiao and his trainer, Freddie Roach, have spoken to the media in order to clarify things.
Pacquiao was quoted by Boxingscene.com saying that it is Mayweather who is once again running away and not him.
“I was in the Philippines, and I told him, ‘We need to make this fight happen.’ I said I would agree to a 50-50,” Pacquiao explained.
“And he said, ‘Oh, I’ll give you a $40-million guarantee, and no pay-per-view. I’ll take all the pay-per-view.’ I didn’t accept that offer,” he added.
“It’s trying to take advantage of me. He doesn’t want to fight,” he added.
Meanwhile, Roach also shared his thoughts with the media.
Pacquiao will take on the current WBO light welterweight champion and two-time light welterweight champion, Timothy Bradley, on June 6, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and Roach commented Bradley at Mayweather’s expense.
Bradley holds an undefeated record of winning all of his 29 professional fights (1 no contest), with 12 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout whereas Mayweather on the other hands also holds a record of winning all of his 42 professional fights, including 26 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout.
Roach said, “It’s nice to be fighting a fighter who’s undefeated, and not worried about losing that ‘0’ on his record and is willing to challenge us. “
