England’s spinner Graeme Swann praised Pakistan’s bowlers for guiding their side to victory in the opening Twenty20 of the three match series at the Dubai Cricket Stadium in United Arab Emirates on Thursday, February 23, 2012.
Swann stated, "They have world-class bowlers at the death and we didn’t cope with that as well as we should have done. Having said that, we got ourselves in a winning position and, nine times out of ten, we would expect to cross the line. It was disappointing
not to do that. We’ve got two games left in the series to make amends."
The wily spinner went onto praise Umar Gul for his spectacular bowling spell towards the end of the innings.
He said, "Gul bowled very well, but in some of the one-dayers we really got after him. T20 is one of those games: it proved that way for me last night. I got three wickets for hardly any runs. On another day it could have been 0-40 or 0-50. So
we certainly won’t panic. We know we can get after Umar Gul. He bowled exceptionally well last night but I’m sure, in the next couple of games, our batsmen will step up to the plate and do that."
The right-arm seamer was named man-of-the-match for his three wicket haul. He did a great job with the new ball, restricting the English openers from playing big shots. Later, he came back towards the end of the innings and took some quick scalps,
leaving the tourists in deep trouble.
At one stage of the match, England required just 35 runs off 30 balls with seven wickets in hand. However, they were unable to score quick runs in the end and were restricted to 136 for the loss of six wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
Swann was disappointed at this outcome, but said that his side has the potential of turning things around in the series.
On the other hand, Pakistan will be looking forward to repeat their winning performance in the second T20 as well, which will give them an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the series.
