Canonical plans to introduce Ubuntu to Android-based tablets – Part 1
Friday, February 24th, 2012 6:34:48 by Usman KhalidSince Microsoft released the Beta version of its new operating system, Windows 8, there have been talks in the circles of technology industry that tablets might replace laptops and desktops in the next 5 to 10 years.
The hybrid nature of the new Windows has forced Apple and Android to compose themselves and their operating systems for the war that awaits them in the future. Apple recently announced the Beta version of its upcoming Mac OS X Mountain Lion that is even closer to iOS than last year’s edition.
On the other hand, Google is planning to patch-up both Android and Chrome to bring a more suitable candidate to tablets than Windows 8. Android has been beleaguering in the tablet industry although it has introduced a slew of them in the last one year including Kindle Fire and Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime.
However, there is another candidate that wants to taste some success in tablet market. Canonical, Ubuntu Linux’s parent company, wants to introduce Ubuntu to smartphones and tablets in the next year or two.
Their prime target would be Android-based tablets and smartphones. The company laid down their strategy: The smartphones and tablets will work their normal Android operations standalone formation, however; when attached to the dock they will turn into a laptop with a movable cursor. The platform will be Ubuntu.
Canonical contends that “The first PC for the next billion knowledge workers could be a phone – but they won’t just want to use it as a handset. They will want all the flexibility and productivity of a full desktop, as well as the convenience of a smartphone on the move. Ubuntu for Android represents the first opportunity for handset makers and network operators to address this growth opportunity in emerging markets.” In a statement, Mark Shuttleworth, Canonical and Ubuntu’s founder said, “The desktop is the killer-app for quad-core phones in 2012. Ubuntu for Android transforms your high-end phone into your productive desktop, whenever you need it”
