The memogate saga continues
Friday, February 24th, 2012 4:37:42 by Faisal FarooqDespite the half-buried memogate case dawdle on, Mansoor Ijaz, the main architect of the memogate drama, has concluded his testimony through a video link, before the judicial commission, in London.
For now, apparently the complexity in itself demonstrates the complications inherent in a case that. A three-judge headed by Chief Justice Balochistan High Court (BHC), Justice Qazi Faez Isa heard the testimony via a video link.
During the unusually long-distance proceedings, Mansoor Ijaz, the US-based business tycoon said that he had been asked by Hussain Haqqani, the former ambassador to US, to convey to the then head of the American military that attacks would be launched on key al-Qaeda leaders inĀ Pakistan if the Chief of Army Staff and DG ISI were asked to step aside.
He further stated that the US desired to have such an offer made from a source higher than Haqqani himself while the latter chose to use him because his role could easily be abnegated.
In his testimony, he claimed that the Pakistani government also showed willingness to nail the culprits named by India in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Apparently, the entire episode was looking disorderly.
In order to give credence to his testimony, the US businessman read out all kinds of messages from his BlackBerry phone.
The panel, tasked by the Supreme Court to investigate the controversial memogate, was informed that the RIM (Research in Motion) had refused to retrieve data from the sets which may further offer a more authentic version of any conversation that exchanged by Hussain Haqqani and Mansoor Ijaz.
It seems we are watching a comedy drama. The memo saga seems to be getting nowhere at all. The military and civilian government, many analysts believe, turned to the US for assist many time since the issues came to the light.
I really have no way of admitting what happened this time around, particularly if Mansoor Ijaz, the whistle-blower in this eccentric case should be believed at all. His statement was strongly contradicted by the ex-Pakistan envoy to Washington, Haqqani.
