Imran Khan to hold rally in Sindh
Saturday, February 25th, 2012 4:49:33 by Faisal FarooqAfter a short break, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) heads back to Sindh for a rally, planning to focus on the province’s major political concerns in the months ahead.
A group of followers of PTI vice chairperson Shah Mehmood Qureshi organized the rally in Umerkot. Qureshi has served foreign minister as leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
PTI Sindh General Secretary Dr Hasan Raza while speaking to the media observed that they were coordinating with them.
In the past, Shah Mehmood Qureshi chose Ghotki instead of his base of Multan to formally announce that he was joining PTI at a November 27 rally that largely comprised of his followers, who consider Qureshi their spiritual leader.
The party’s attempts to build a niche for itself in Sindh have not yield much thus far. No prominent politicians have jumped ship to the party despite the success of its rallies in Ghotki and Karachi.
The Multan-based Qureshi met several politicians during his visits to Karachi including Sindh United Party president Jalal Mehmood Shah, but the nationalists are still wary of the party. He also attended the funeral of Pir Pagaro VII last month.
The party thinks the Umerkot rally will prove those who hold claim to Sindh that the PTI has a visible presence in the region. The leader observed, “The people of Sindh have no facilities, there is inflation. The area that we have chosen for the rally, Tharparkar, is one of the least developed”.
The party officials observed that, Imran Khan, the chief of the PTI, will be taking a more active role in promoting the party in the province in the coming weeks. Last week, Imran Khan while speaking to the media said that the party would be travelling across the province to persuade people that they need to support the wave of change.
Quoting Imran, a party press statement observed that this his travels through Sindh made him realize that interior areas of the province were as backward as Balochistan with Sardars, feudals and landlords holding away and that no leader had really done anything for the poor people of these regions.
Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Imran will both address the rally to attract more supporters for their party.
