Underworld: Awakening (2012) – Movie review

The age old war between the Vampires and Lycans continue in the fourth instalment of the series, but is it a worthy addition or just sucking the life out of the series?

The Underworld movies have been around for quite some time and are a great reminder to the world what werewolves and vampire movies should be about, unlike a certain Twilight saga.

While the trailer for the film stirred up some interest for the fourth outing of the series, there was a certain level of apprehension as very few films manage to carry on or reinvigorate what made the series so great.

Take SAW IV or Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, as example. They were a downright mess that attempted to defy the ‘rule of three’ and failed.

Luckily for fans of the Underworld series, Awakening not only revives the series but adds a feeling of ‘freshness’ to it. Not only are new characters introduced but the film’s protagonist finds herself in a new setting, which the audience learns about alongside
her.

The reason is that she has been in cryogenic slumber for 12 years before she finally escapes the facility and finds out that a lot has changed since she was last conscious.

Vampires have gone into hiding and Lycans are nearly extinct, as mankind went on the rampage against the two species.

The movie really comes into its own in 3D and the action sequences make full use of the extra dimension as the audience will find glass, blood, bullets and claws coming at them from time to time.

As for the overall story, there is enough in there to keep everything tied together yet the movie feels more like a rebirth of the series as the ending makes clear and the first step in a fresh start to the series seems to have hit the mark.

One can only hope that it continues on to the next film.

Verdict: fans of the series will love Awakening while action movie buffs are sure to get a kick out of the action sequences in the movie as well.
