Dell releases the first ultrabook XPS 13 in the market – Part 1
Monday, February 27th, 2012 5:14:07 by Usman KhalidFinally, the most awaited ultrabook is out on the shop shelves. Dell announced XPS 13 its first ultra-slim notebook in the last quarter of calendar 2011. Many experts had a hands-on experience of device, and then the company showcased a slightly improvised version at the Consumer Electronics Show 2012. However, now the machine is up for grabs at retail stores and Dell shops at $999.
Though the machine barely misses the $1000 mark, it still has some of the best specs one can imagine in an ultrabook. Neither is it one of the first ultra-slim notebooks nor is it the thinnest but still it is a good bargain at a thousand bucks.
The screen is a stunner although it fails to reach the top resolution at 1,600×900-pixel, offered by most of its foes. The edge-to-edge Gorilla Glass cover on screen is a nice touch but it also is glarier, and off-axis viewing might need a night-vision goggles to see or read anything on the screen.
Even though the screen is 13-inch in size (diagonal), Dell claims that the chassis, in which the screen is nestled, is not more than 11 inches. However, there seems some ambiguity in the statement however; it is an attractive marketing strategy—the chassis is a little over the 11-inch mark, probably more like 12 inches.
11-inch or 12, XPS is an attractive machine and is has striking resemblance to Apple’s Macbook Air. Other than the logo, it is hard to differentiate between the two with the lids closed.
XPS 13 not only comes close to Air in terms shape and dimensions but it also bears specs that are the close to the Apple product and for the money paid it definitely takes the lead in the race.
