The Supreme Court hearing against the Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani has been adjourned further till the 7th March. The hearing had already been adjourned once before this as well.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan has called in the Cabinet Secretary Nargis Sethi today to act as a witness in the case of contempt against the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Aitzaz Ahsan, who is the counsel of the Prime Minister of Pakistan in this case, made the following comments regarding the matter: "The Prime Minister should be granted a chance to provide a complete defence (of his actions)."
Other than that, the Prime Minister’s lawyer Aitzaz also filed a petition previously, that consisted of the following statements: "In his private/personal capacity the applicant cannot and does not wish to exercise the official power and authority of the
office of the prime minister to direct or require any official to appear as a witness even though he seeks the opportunity to present evidence and witnesses in his defence against the charge. With respect to private individuals, he has no power or authority
to summon them."
The Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani was held in contempt of the Supreme Court of Pakistan because he did not follow repeated orders from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court of Pakistan had been asking the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani
to write to the Swiss probe in order to re start an investigation against the current President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari. The investigation was about a money laundering case in which both the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari as well as Bhutto were
named for being involved.
However, the investigation was made to come to a stop by the signing of the National Reconciliation Ordinance by Bhutto during the time that the President of Pakistan was Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf. However, the apex court of the country had deemed the
NRO as illegal which in effect called for the restarting of the investigation against the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari. Yousuf Raza Gilani had not complied with the orders of the Supreme Court to write to the Swiss probe to restart the investigation
for which he was charged with contempt of Court.
