Submarine: Movie Recommendation of the week

It is that time of the week when our panel of movie enthusiasts recommend a movie for your viewing pleasure. This week we recommend Richard Ayoade’s ‘Submarine‘.
Romantic comedies are more often than not a predictable affair. Theres comedy at the beginning as the couple meets and develops feeling for one another, before things take a turn for the worse and then is the poetic happy ending.
Submarine does not break that formula apart from the one thing that seperates it from any other film in the genre: there is comedy uptil the very end.
The comedy, though, does not come in the form of jokes one would find in Hangover or other movies such as Get Smart, but rather from the situation and the dialouge more than anything else.
Submarine kicks off on a subtly hilarious tone with a voice over aimed at American audiences and it asks them to respect the film as it is a collection of the ‘stars’ memories. The star happens to be Oliver Tate and the message is for everyone, not just
the Americans.
From there on in the movie gets into gear and maintains a smooth pace throughout the movie. Very rarely does a single frame or dialouge seem wasted.
The character development and plot is another of the movie’s strengths as, very soon, the audience begins to be able to understand Oliver’s every move as he attempts to balance his love life and trying to keep his parents together.
There are plenty of awkward moments in the movie in terms of jokes, yet as subtle as they are, one will find themselves laughing out loud.
The film is directed by Richard Ayoade, who happened to be one of the stars in the TV series, The IT Crowd.
While he was brilliant in that particular show, his ability to keep the movie flowing at pleasantly entertaining pace really shines through here.
The movie is not new, it was released in 2010 and we are sure that not many have seen it, which is why we are urging everyone to do so.
