Sindh Cup qualifier Vishan Gir showed some excellent snooker skills on the opening day of 2012 Jubilee Insurance 37th National Snooker Championship. Gir was up against former National
Number one potter, Punjab’s Imran Shehzad and proved his class by getting off to a sensational start. With some sensational potting skills, he was able to oust Shehzad by the score line of 4-0.
The Whitewash defeat was indeed a major blow to the top seed. Even the critics are claiming Shehzad’s defeat a major upset of the event. The Punjabi had no chance to capitalise back into
the game at the Karachi Gymkhana Billiards Hall arena and tumbled four frames down easily in the end. Gir, on the other hand, was outstanding at the baize as he made no mistake to win the first-round clash.
The Sindhi potter pocketed a couple of amazing breaks of 65 and 64 to unsettle his veteran opponent. The left hander claimed all four sets consecutively by the impressive score line of
88-29, 68-15, 61-04 and 67-34. Gir, representative of Pakistan in 2006 Busan Asian Games, has now made his way into the second round of the event.
Regardless of having a strong grip on the game from the past couple months, diminutive Shahzad seemed lost on the match as he could not pot simple balls and missed many. Shehzad represented
Pakistan in the 2011 IBSF World Snooker Championship and reached the first round. Despite crashing out of the 37th National Snooker Championship, Shehzad is still hoping for a better future.
Meanwhile, top potters like Muhammad Asif, Sharjeel Mahmood and the defending champion Shahid Aftab faced some of the toughest opponents in their first round matches but still managed
to take the first-round glory by identical score lines of 4-3.
