Samsung Galaxy S Advance: Hands-on Review (Mobile World Congress 2012)

Samsung announced Galaxy S-series phone, S Advance, at the Mobile World Congress 2012, Barcelona. The phone caters to a budget-oriented market segment that can afford some extra cash for HD videos.

However, the phone, being the next thing in the S-series with the suffix Advance, was a disappointment in a few features.

First off, the phone carries a typical Galaxy S-series shape, which gives a very monotonous overall feel to handset. Although the price was not announced at the event, the looks of it suggest the phone will fall exactly in the middle of affordable and premium phones.

On the bright side, S Advance has a 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED screen. Samsung is getting pretty serious about the screen sharpness of its devices and the Advance confirms the notion. The screen gives the handset a positive touch however; every other thing about the phone is second-rated.

S Advance runs on Google’s mobile operating system, Android 2.3 Gingerbread. If not the latest Ice Cream Sandwich, Samsung could at least pull off Android 3.x Honeycomb to justify the smartphone.

Samsung failed to showcase any handset with the latest Android OS, Ice Cream Sandwich, which was a disappointment for Android lovers who were expecting ICS smartphones from their beloved company.

However, that being said, the phone centres around a 1 GHz dual-core processor. The event was flooded by quad-core handset but Samsung did not showcase any smartphone with a more advanced processing chip than dual-core.

There are two cameras on either side of the phone. The rear end bears a 5-mega pixel camera accompanied by an LED flash while the front side has a 1.3-mega pixel snapper for video chatting. Both cameras have the capability of capturing 720p video. So, that may be another positive point in S Advance’s case. Let see if it helps in luring customers to the shops.

Though the phone gives a typical Galaxy S look but this little fellow is slim. Samsung is pulling off a number of smartphones that are mesmerizingly thin. You’ll have to wait for the full review to shore up on the internet.
