Samsung launches Galaxy Mini 2 at Mobile World Congress 2012

Samsung unveiled a slew of smartphones at Mobile World Congress 2012, Barcelona. The company’s main focus was on the phones churned out of the strategic partnership with Google on Android platform, Galaxy. The product line ranged from mediocre smartphones running Android 2.3 Gingerbread to premium handsets with the same version. It looks as if Samsung are afraid of cannibalizing Samsung Galaxy Nexus’ market value with another phone with Ice Cream Sandwich.

In the lot was Galaxy Mini 2, the second of the Mini family. Though there’s nothing special about the smartphone per se, it falls in the economical category of the Galaxy line.

Everything about the handset is normal. The screen is 3.3 inches in diagonal but Samsung has managed to keep the phone’s chassis within the constraints of what experts call ‘thin’.

Behind the phone resides a 3-mega pixel camera that is capable of capturing HD video. However, more reviews will pour in once the phone hits the market. The front side contains a 1-mega pixel camera for video chatting.

The company has announced that the whole line will arrive at the shelves in the start of the second quarter but the US will probably not have the honours of embracing Mini 2.

As for the outlook, the phone gives a typical Galaxy phone look but is thin. It feels small in the palm and its footprint is smaller as well.

Samsung has included Android 2.3 Gingerbread that was seen on other handsets as well despite the pricing factor. However, there has been no announcement about any updates to Ice Cream Sandwich so far. Maybe it won’t get one.

The screen lacks AMOLED technology but still its sharp and the pixel population is reasonable. Standard features like Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G compatibility and GSM/CDMA that build up a smartphone are all included in the device.

On the edges are volume rocker, camera snapper and mini-USB port.
