Role of security agencies
Friday, March 2nd, 2012 3:27:35 by Faisal FarooqUltimately the Supreme Court awakened taking up Asghar Khan’s petition that was pending for last 16 years. Although Air Marshal (Retd) Asghar Khan pressed the media after restoration of independent judiciary, it took years to reopen the case to which powerful intelligence agencies are involved.
Finally the matter is being taken up after a drawn-out delay that would raise questions about how the court determines the priorities of the cases to be resolved.
When the hearing started in the current week, the sealed record connected with the case was not available due to state of neglect meted out to the petition. The proceedings were adjourned for a week to find the sealed documents.
Both the ISI (Inter Services Intelligence) and politicians have been accused in the petition. However, it was not the first or last time that the intelligence agency interfered in politics to get the electoral results of its wishes.
In short, the manipulations the security agency have barred the growth of the institutions, elevated corruption among the political lot while weakening the democratic norms. The ISI has played vital role in breaching the mainstream political groups and strengthening the dictatorial rulers.
In order to serve its own interests, the spy agency crafted new political groups and alliances. Furthermore, it has engaged politicians and maintained elements in the mainstream media on its payroll.
Corruption is politics will continue to flourish in the country until those who devised the plan to rig the 1990 elections are dished out exemplary punishments.
Those politicians are equally blamed for the rigging who received money from ISI. A political leader is a role model for the coming generations. In this specific case, politicians acted as henchmen of the spy agency in return for money.
A through need is need of the hour as some included in the ISI list refused receiving funds. Cases should be conducted against those who have accepted the payments.
This case is no more than the tip of an iceberg in the misconducts done the by the ISI. The apex court should form a commission to investigate other cases of gross interference by the spy agency in political matters to close the chapter for the good reason.
