Vitali Klitschko: I would have rather died than lose my title against that creep ‘Dereck Chisora’
Monday, March 5th, 2012 6:32:58 by Imran Shaukat KhanVitali Klitschko, the current WBC heavyweight champion, has insisted that he was not willing to make the same mistake against Dereck Chisora which he made in 2000 against Chris Byrd.
Vitali fought Chris Byrd back in 2000 at the Estrel Convention Center in Nuekolln, Berlin and he suffered a tragic defeat to the American. Vitali, who is more commonly known as ‘Dr. Ironfist’, was leading on all three scorecards but during the contest he got a left shoulder injury, which forced him to quit on his stool.
The 6 ft 7 in Ukrainian giant found himself in the same situation against Chisora recently but this time he had no intentions of losing his title to man who slapped him at their weigh in.
The 40-year-old Vitali, who holds a record of winning 44 of his 46 professional fights, with 40 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, lost to Lennox Lewis as well in 2003 after he sustaining a brutal cut under his left eye, which required sixty stitches.
“My tendon tore and it hit a nerve, so I couldn’t lift my left arm..it wouldn’t obey me. I had two choices. Twelve years ago in the fight against Chris Byrd….because the tendon was torn, the pain unbearable. I was ahead [on the cards] and I lost my world championship. In Munich, I chose the second option. [I] gritted my teeth and pulled myself together. I would have rather died than lose my title against that creep,” Vitali said.
As per the latest reports, Vitali is once again having conversations with for WBA heavyweight champion, David Haye, for a potential fight.
Haye, who is known as the Hayemaker, walked away from the sport last year after suffered a humiliating defeat to Vitali younger brother, Wladimir Klitschko, on July 2, 2011 but he always said that he will make a comeback, if he gets a fight against any of the Klitschko brothers. So let’s hope a fight between Haye and Vitali gets real since it will certainly make many out there flock to the arenas.

This shows that in a sporting contest it’s best to be a well behaved gentleman. Vitali gave up his title against Chris Byrd, a well behaved devout Christian gentleman, so that he, Vitali, could fight again another day. But against Chisora who had slapped him and spit in the face of his brother he resolved that he would rather die than give up his title. Chisora’s rude actions worked against him.
