Windows 8: A complete review of the Beta version – Part 1

For all Windows lovers, Microsoft has unleashed the Beta version of their upcoming operating system, Windows 8. Even at the first glance it gives the look of a completely revamped and tablet-friendly OS. Although it is an inspiration of Windows Phone 7 and Windows Media Center that came with Windows 7, it has bushels of new features and applications that would simply take your breath away.

The operating system however, came a little late to confront both Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, but if we surf through the pages of history, we come to know that MS has never been ‘too late’ to enter any market segment.

The good news for Microsoft is that Android has been a flop in the tablet market so far and the only foe to best is iOS, and it is the 800-pound gorilla in the room, mind that. Bill Gates’ firm, it seems though, has addressed that issue with some mesmerizing features in the new operating system.

The new software is both compatible with desktops and tablets, but it seems the inclination is toward the latter technology. Apple has been going places with its signature slate, iPad, and it is about time that Microsoft entered the ring to claim some of the glory. It might not be able to knock iOS out but it will surely give its opponent a run for its money in the competition to build up in the latter half of the year.

Among others, the new Win8 has touchier feel to it than a typical desktop operating system. The new Metro interface is more tablet-oriented than desktops or laptops for that matter. However, the OS is completely compatible to input peripherals like mouse and keyboard.

Though it has its own virtual keyboard in the software, which pops up at appropriate times, it can be seamlessly connected to a physical keyboard via Bluetooth or wire. For lengthy typing like mails and documents, physical keyboard option is the one recommended.
