Australia’s Test and One Day International (ODI) skipper Michael Clarke admits he should have rested a bit longer in order to recover fully from his hamstring injury, which he sustained against India in the Commonwealth Bank Series.
The 30-year-old cricketer might be ruled out of the third final against Sri Lanka, as his hamstring injury worsened during today’s game at the Adelaide Oval.
"I’ve done something to my left hamstring, I don’t know to what extent," Clarke said. "I have to have a scan tomorrow, but it’s obviously not feeling good at the moment. We leave for West Indies in three days. I don’t want to make a
judgment until we have the scan, I think I’d be silly to do that. It’s a tough one. I pushed really hard to try to get back for this finals series and tried my best not to give Alex much of an option to be honest."
He went onto say, "So I feel for him (Alex) as much as my left leg at the moment, because I know he probably would’ve preferred me to take it easy, but I wanted to be part of this finals series. But after straining my right one
I’ve probably favoured my left over the past couple of weeks or 10 days and I’ve done a bit of damage there, so we’ll wait and see."
Clarke’s presence in today’s match did not save Australia from an eight-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka, who managed to level the finals 1-1, with one more game to go on Thursday, March 8, 2012.
The Aussie captain scored a suoerb century today and was run-out for 117 off just 91 balls. However, his effort only guided the team to 271 in the end, which was not enough on a flat pitch.
Other than Clarke, the home team’s opener David Warner also contributed 100 runs to the total, but he was not in his full flow and took 140 deliveries to reach his ton.
In reply, the tourists got off to a fabulous start, as openers Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan put on 179 runs together. They scored 80 and 106 respectively, making it easy for their side to win the match in 44.2 overs.
Clarke will be hoping that his injury is not of a serious concern, but he is almost certain to miss the third game of the final against the Lankan Lions.
