The U.S. President Barack Obama has had a recent meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Oval Office on Monday. The meeting lasted for about two hours and Obama tried to win the trust of Netanyahu, who represent America’s top ally in
the Middle East. He openly supported Israel and assured that he would not allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon.
At the meeting, Obama made clear to Israeli Prime Minister that his policy is not to contain an Iranian nuclear arsenal but to stop Iranian leadership from developing one, administration officials said. In making his case for diplomacy over a military strike,
Obama also guaranteed Netanyahu that Israel has the right to take action in its own national security interests.
The U.S. officials were uncertain whether the president had succeeded in urging the Israelis to hold off on one-sided military action but the Israeli officials afterward called the talks “positive” and said both sides agreed on the need to continue economic
and political pressure on Iran.
A senior administration official who shared the information on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private meeting stated, “Our assessment is that they have not made a decision. While I can’t say for sure that we bought time, I think they certainly
feel more assured about our intentions. They can say and feel that the ball had moved forward in that respect.”
However, Netanyahu made sizzling speech to the Jewish American advocacy after the meeting. He emphasized that recent economic sanctions have failed to stop Iran’s march to nuclear-weapons capability. The audience cheered at the Israeli president and supported
his views. Netanyahu further added that he will never allow his people to live in the shadow of annihilation.
In the recent days, Obama urged Israel to refrain from a military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities as it could be harmful for the region. Many in the U.S. administration feared such move, which could actually set off a regional war in the volatile
Middle East. Such a conflict in the oil-rich region would send gasoline prices even higher, exacerbating an election-year threat to Obama.
