Two denials reduce intensity of memogate saga

In what appeared to be a quite an ironic development, the inglorious memogate scam, which was conceived of widening the rift between the security establishment and the government, has shown an example of harmony.

Both the ISPR and the Presidency issued denials in reply to allegations of Mansoor Ijaz, the Pakistani-origin US businessman.

While appearing before the judicial commission via a video link, Mansoor Ijaz revealed that Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani and President Asif Ali Zardari had a conversation before the May 02 secret operation in which Osama bin Laden was killed by the US Special Forces.

However, this practice should not be halted at the level of ISPR and the presidential spokesperson. The two institutions themselves, particularly the security establishment, should extend the trend, which has been more intransigent of the two in the present scenario.

It is suitable time that the Supreme Court should also review its role in the issue. It should prioritize cases that affect the daily lives of the masses instead of catering to the caprices of Mansoor Ijaz, the US business tycoon, who demanded for the apex court to order for an elected president to appear.

In quite a disappointing move, the backlog of cases is immense and the quality of judicial review has been far from ideal, particularly at the level of lower courts. There is rampant corruption to be found at every step as courts drag on and on cases.

Mansoor Ijaz, the suspicious character, is difficult to like, even for those who consider his disclosures about the memogate to be the creed reality. Those who were supporting his allegations against the government are not comfortable with his allegations against the army.

At the same time, he is not credible enough to believe his revelations. Everyone is amazed how a person occupied so much of the media’s and court’s time and energy.

It seems that a man, who is known for seeking attention and a desire to be seen to be in the thick of things, has ridden the press corps and the polity in general.

Everyone will have to review its working parameters in order to comply with the rules and regulations.
