Google’s Android remains the underdog in the mobile computing market – Part 2
Tuesday, March 6th, 2012 2:48:18 by Usman KhalidIn addition to Google’s App Market, there are numerous third-party applications that not only contain bugs but malware in them due to sloppy checks and signature systems. Even Google’s own application centre does not have appropriate checks and balances in this regard.
Late in 2011, the Silicon Valley-based company had to bring down a number of applications from its application centre due to the complaints of malware in them.
Moreover, the integration of older versions in the new updates is another plus to their side. Many of Android-based applications designed for one version do not always work on the others, or on the handsets by other companies. Samsung Galaxy Nexus, for example, runs IC S but due to the lack of any buttons on the front side, any ICS-compatible application designed for Motorola Droid Razr will have hard time running on the Nexus.
In addition, screen resolution has been Android’s Achilles Heel. Since many new handsets and countless new tablets have spawned in the last one year, the screen resolution adjustment has become a major problem for applications to run on. Every company has its own choice of screen size, for example Kindle Fire is a 7-inch device, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a 10.1-inch device and Samsung Note is a 5.3-inch tablet-cum-smartphone, and all run the same Android Gingerbread 2.X.
Screen quality however, has been Android’s plus point. With AMOLED technology the OS has leapt ahead of iOS, but wait until iPad 3 hits the market. The new tablet will surely give Google a run for its money.
Android is thriving on the latest LTE 4G wireless communication technology but it is more like a hype created by the companies that use Android. The US and European market has not even utilized the former technology at its fullest and Apple knows it. So far, the latest model iPhone 4S has not received any backlashes on the lack of 4G of HSPA.
