PML-N MNA Anjum Aqeel Khan gets post-arrest bail
Tuesday, March 6th, 2012 9:32:48 by Faisal FarooqIslamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday granted post-arrest bail to PML-N’s Member National Assembly (MNA) Anjum Aqeel Khan on medical grounds in the multi-billion National Police Foundation land scam case.
A medical board of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) submitted its report saying that they lack facilities for the cardiac treatment of the arrested legislator. Upon which the court granted him bail against two surety bonds worth of one million each.
Earlier, the court had directed the deputy executive director of the PIMS to form a medical board to ascertain the health condition of Anjum Aqeel Khan who had applied for bail after arrest on medical grounds.
According to the report submitted by the PIMS’s official to the court the board claimed that the accused needs a heart surgery at the earliest. In its view, the accused patient should be shifted Agha Khan Hospital, in Karachi.
Earlier Aqeel had filed a bail plea with the IHC on February 14 after a special judge rejected his bail application on January 25. While submitting the bail petition, Aqeel’s Counsel Tanveer Iqbal Advocate had informed the court that his client was not in good health.
“Doctors at the PIMS have advised my client a heart surgery in Agha Khan Hospital,” Advocate Iqbal prayed to the court. The lawyer further said condition of his client would be more painful if he was not shifted to Karachi.
After hearing the arguments of Aqeel’s lawyer, the court had referred the matter to the deputy executive director of the PIMS and granted him the bail after receiving the medical report.
MNA Anjum Aqeel was arrested from courtroom in December last year after a special court had rejected his bail plea in the multibillion National Police Foundation land scam case.
The PML-N lawmaker had appeared before the court where judge rejected his plea, refusing to extend his interim bail. Upon which, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officials arrested him.
He applied for post-arrest bail on medical grounds as he is suffering heart problems. The PML-N continuously criticised the federal government saying that cases against its lawmakers were politically motivated and biased.
An inquiry team of PML-N, headed by Senator Raja Zafar ul Haq, had also held investigation into the scam, which declared Aqeel innocent.
