Lashkar Gah: A blast in Lashkar Gah, Afghanistan claimed six soldiers’ lives here today. With the recent deaths, the British toll in Afghanistan has reached to 404 since 2001’s US-led invasion in the region.
According to the news, five of the killed soldiers belonged to 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, while the sixth one was from 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment. The soldiers were on mounted
patrol when hit by an explosive.
Commenting on the incident that took place yesterday, Brigadier Patrick Sanders, the commander of the Task Force Helmand told the Journalists, “One of the Warriors suffered catastrophic damage in the course of that explosion.”
Since 2006, the incident marked the biggest single loss of life for British troops in Afghanistan. Britain is currently having second largest contingent in Afghanistan after the United States.
Commenting on the incident, British Prime Minister David Cameron said, “It is a reminder of the huge price that we are paying for the work we are doing in Afghanistan and the sacrifice that our troops have made and continue to
make.”
He said, “I do believe it’s important work for our national security right here at home but of course this work will increasingly be carried out by Afghan soldiers and we all want to see that transition take place.”
As there are news for foreign troops to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014, doubts still persist whether the Afghan soldiers will be able to control one of the most unstable region in the world.
Considering the fact that over 400 British soldiers had died in the war in Afghanistan, a senior British military source said, “I don’t think soldiers see these round numbers, psychological milestones. It’s disappointing to have
this at the end of the tour but at this stage in the tour with how much progress we’ve made, we’re able to contextualize this.”
