Law and order in Balochistan can’t improve without CM’s interest

Islamabad: (Tuesday, March 7, 2012) Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said today that the law and order situation in Balochistan could not get any better without Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani’s interest.

The remarks came when the CJ, heading a three-member bench, heard the case here today.

Deliberating on how the burning issue of the province can be resolved, the Chief Justice directed the authorities concerned to convene a Jirga with collaborations of Sardar Ataullah Maingal, Khair Baksh Marri and other prominent
tribal leaders.

As the case preceded, Attorney General of Pakistan Maulvi Anwarul Haq, Advocate General Balochistan and the Additional IG CID Shabir Shaikh appeared before the court today.

Submitting replies on behalf of Military Intelligence (MI) and Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI), the attorney general submitted a sealed report before the bench, in which the agencies pleaded for holding an in-camera briefing on
court’s orders.

Meanwhile, the additional IG CID submitted a detailed report on the murder of Domki family in Karachi.

Airing his remarks during the proceeding, the chief justice said that the law and order situation in the province was deteriorating with every passing day as dead bodies were found every day. He was of the view that it was government’s
responsibility to maintain peace in the area.

Lamenting the fact that even security officers were not safe in the province, the CJ noted, “Balochis are our own people and no one is outsider there.”

Stressing on the need for practical measures to fix the issue, Justice Khilji said that the situation in Balochistan reminds them of 1971. He said, “Statements won’t fix anything. Practical implementation is needed to resolve the
issue.”

The hearing on the case was adjourned until March 20.
