Islamabad: (Wednesday, March 07, 2012) Announcing its verdict here today, the Election Commission of Pakistan served Waheeda Shah a two-year disqualification and declared the elections in her constituency void.
Earlier, the Election Commission had reserved its verdict over Shah slapping a presiding officer in Tando Muhammad Khan.
Justice (retd) Hamid Ali Mirza, the Chief Election Commissioner along with election commission members justice (retd) Riaz Kayani (Punjab), Justice (retd) Fazulr Rehman, Shahzad Akbar Khan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) and Roshan Ali Essani
heard the proceeding.
Waheeda Shah, while contesting for a seat vacated by her deceased husband in by election, had slapped a presiding officer Habiba Memon and Assistant Presiding Officer Shagufta Memon in a polling station in presence of a DSP.
The video footage of the sad incident that was repeatedly played on news channels left the entire nation shocked.
The Election Commission of Pakistan, taking up the issue, announced its verdict today, which was widely appreciated by the civil society, human rights activists and the politicians.
The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry also took suo motto notice of the incident to which Shah apologized for the shameful treatment she meted out to the ECP officers.
Yesterday, despite receiving summon by the Election Commission of Pakistan, Waheeda Shah did not turn up before the ECP. In her absence, her lawyer maintained that his client’s reaction was the result of a misunderstanding.
Meanwhile, Irfan Shah, the DSP who was present when the shocking incident took place but did not try to stop Waheeda from the shameful act, was also suspended by the IG Sindh on Tuesday.
